Hong Kong Social Service Council Gender Salon - Understanding and Challenging Gender Stereotypes
Hong Kong has become increasingly accepting of gender roles and diversity, yet gender stereotypes persist in self-perception, daily life, and social media networks. These stereotypes have far-reaching implications for various communities, such as increased mental stress due to fixed societal expectations of gender roles and appearance anxiety among youth. Even some social policies overlook gender roles, limiting personal development and creating social problems.
In this salon, the Hong Kong Social Service Council has invited three organizations to share how they use different research and advocacy methods to address gender stereotypes. These include:
- Nature-based sensory training to cultivate gender awareness among staff and service users.
- Workshops combining sports and art to alleviate appearance anxiety among adolescents.
- Storytelling to illustrate the phenomenon of gender stereotyping.
The goal of this salon is to enhance the awareness of gender stereotypes among frontline workers, service users, and the public. More importantly, it aims to encourage workers to reflect on their values, the nature of their relationships with service users, and their approaches to addressing social issues. Together, we can advocate for services and policies that take gender perspectives into account.
